Hockey: India-style penalty corner routines under the microscope

Analysts say variation, not power, is the key to the league's highest conversion rate.

Harbour Hawks converted 38 percent of penalty corners this season, the best in the league. Their coach says they use six routines.

  • Direct flick: 18 percent of attempts.
  • Short pass and drag: 41 percent.
  • Slip: 33 percent.

Opposition analysts say the Hawks hide their intentions by using the same first two steps for every routine. The injector places the ball, the stopper traps it, and only then do the shooters peel off.

The routines are practised for 25 minutes after each training session, with a dummy defence in padded vests. The league average conversion is 21 percent.

This is a demo story: every name, place, organisation and figure in it is fictional.
